About the Role
The Principal Designer is a senior individual contributor with strategic influence, accountable for delivering exceptional product design while shaping design direction and quality across the organization. This role bridges hands-on execution with strategic design leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Execution: Deliver high-fidelity product designs for complex, high-impact initiatives, balancing user needs with business goals through elegant, scalable solutions.
- Strategic Impact: Actively shape product roadmaps with product and engineering, ensuring design thinking is embedded early, not retrofitted.
- Systems Thinking: Establish, maintain, and refine scalable design systems and reusable patterns that enable consistency without stifling innovation.
- Mentorship & Nurturing: Guide, mentor, and nurture young designers, helping them build craft, confidence, and strategic thinking while maintaining accountability for quality.
- Detail & Perspective Switching: Maintain a strong eye for detail while frequently switching between 30,000 ft strategic views and 400 ft detailed execution, ensuring alignment without losing sight of critical nuances.
- Operating in VUCA: Thrive in Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous (VUCA) environments by adapting approaches, prioritizing effectively, and maintaining design momentum under shifting conditions.
- Research and Validation: Lead or support user research, usability testing, and rapid prototyping to validate hypotheses and uncover user needs.
- Cross-Functional Influence: Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to align on goals while championing user-centered design.
- Thought Leadership: Contribute to the design culture through critiques, knowledge sharing, and codifying design approaches for repeatability and team growth.
Requirements
- 8–12 years in UX/UI/product design with a strong, shipped portfolio demonstrating end-to-end problem-solving in complex systems.
- Advanced skills in interaction design, visual design, and information architecture and great storytelling skills, with fluency in tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe CS.
- Proven experience establishing and scaling design systems.
- Ability to simplify complex workflows without oversimplifying essential user needs.
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, using structured thinking to influence diverse stakeholders.
- Comfort and effectiveness in VUCA environments, balancing speed with quality and adaptability.
- Strong eye for design detail, coupled with the discipline to zoom out to align with business strategy.
- Demonstrated mentorship of junior designers, with evidence of helping others improve craft and confidence.
- Familiarity with front-end technologies to collaborate meaningfully with engineers.
